Chef Sonia Bertelone, Maddie Crain, GBHS

The Helena Market Days will be open this Saturday (6/9) from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon.  Last Saturday we had a great turnout and the farmers sold all of their produce.  Let’s keep it up as I am sure they will bring extra produce this week.  We have a lineup of farmers, craft vendors, guest chefs, live music, and a non-profit group every week.

The market is in the Old Town Helena Amphitheater and opens at 8:00am and closes at 12:00n every Saturday through August 25.

Our guest chef this Saturday is . . .

Chef Sonia Bertelone who will be preparing Bruschetta and Tiramisu.  Chef Bertelone is the chef for Joe’s Italian in Alabaster.

The first Joe’s Italian Restaurant was established in June of 1981 in Gilroy, California by Giuseppe and Elvira Bertolone. Joe and Mamma emigrated from Italy in 1977 with their small children Michael and Sonia. Joe’s quickly became a beloved local icon and Gilroy landmark and has been featured in the Library of Congress and on the Food Network.

After dedicating 27 years of their lives to their successful family restaurant business, Joe and Mamma decided to retire, subsequently selling their beloved restaurant in early 2007, and relocating to Alabama to be closer to their daughters Mary and Sonia. Soon after, their son Michael, decided to join the rest of the family in Alabama and the new adventure begins to unfold.

The family has joined forces to bring Joe’s to Alabaster, Alabama. Collectively, they share with you their love and passion for Italian culture and cuisine. They believe in fresh food, prepared with only the best ingredients. They also believe in excellent customer service. It is Joe’s goal to provide a clean and friendly, family atmosphere and to be your locally owned and operated neighborhood restaurant.

Live music will be provided by . . .

Maddie Crain is one of the top 8 finalists for the La Reunion Junior Idol where she will also be performing Saturday night at 8:00pm.

Maddie is a very talented young lady so you don’t want to miss her performance.

Maddie is not compensated for entertaining so be generous with your tips.

Our Non-Profit this week is . . .

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society which was founded in 1863 and is the largest and oldest humane society in Alabama.  Over the course of their history they have witnessed the changes in the community and yet have never left the original mission of Dr. Phillips “to promote respect for life through education and prevention of cruelty to animals and people”.

Hi, my name is Balboa! I’m affectionate, cuddly, loving, and such a sweetheart. I might seem a little shy when I first meet you, but don’t worry, I’ll warm up to you quickly. I get along great with other cats, and you can usually find me snuggling with my feline buddies here at the shelter. They say that I’m pretty handsome, too–check out my beautiful marbled markings. Do you have room in your heart and home for me? Please make my day and adopt me today!

Last but certainly not least, watch a short video of the Helena Market Days.

Come early – stay late – pick up your fresh produce and craft items – enjoy the chef demo and live music.  I look forward to seeing you at the market!
